Tibouchina urvilleana is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) tall in its native habitat, but typically reaches 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) in cultivation. It has dark green, velvety leaves and produces large, showy, purple flowers that bloom in late summer and fall.
6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters)
Tibouchina urvilleana prefers full sun to partial shade. It will tolerate some shade, but may not flower as profusely.
Tibouchina urvilleana prefers moderate to high humidity. Mist the leaves regularly with water to increase humidity levels.
Fertilize every 2-3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce fertilizer application in the fall and winter.
Prune Tibouchina urvilleana in late winter or early spring to control its size and shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches.
Tibouchina urvilleana is susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters)
Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Do not allow the soil to become waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot.
Tibouchina urvilleana prefers warm temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). It can tolerate temperatures as low as 40°F (4°C), but may drop its leaves if exposed to prolonged cold.
