Dypsis lutescens is a species of flowering plant in the palm family Arecaceae, native to Madagascar. It is also known by the common name Areca palm, golden cane palm, and butterfly palm. The plant has a slender, solitary trunk with large, arching feather-like fronds. It produces small yellow flowers that develop into orange-red fruits.
20-30 feet (6-9 meters)
Areca palms prefer bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
Areca palms prefer high humidity levels. Mist the leaves regularly or place the plant on a tray filled with pebbles and water.
Fertilize the plant every 2-3 months with a balanced fertilizer. Do not over-fertilize as it can burn the roots.
Remove yellowing or brown fronds as needed. Do not remove more than 20% of the plant's fronds at once.
Common pests for Areca palms include spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Diseases like leaf spot and root rot can also affect the plant.
6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters)
Water the plant when the top inch of soil is dry. Do not let the soil dry out completely. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Areca palms prefer temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). They can tolerate temperatures as low as 55°F (13°C) but not for extended periods of time.
