In a desert garden, there can be many flowering perennials if that is the direction you prefer to take. One of my many favorites is Salvia greggii, commonly known as autumn sage. Most sages in this species are short, a half-meter or a bit taller, herbaceous but developing a soft woody branch structure. This cultivar is purple but autumn sage ranges from shades of white, yellow, orange, salmon, pink, and magenta to bright red. Each color has a slight DNA variation that affects not only the color but also the length of bloom time. The plants benefit from being pruned back about 33% in the fall after the long bloom season. They will respond with re-invigorated growth and flowers during the spring and summer months. One of the greatest enjoyments in native, desert flower gardening has been watching hummingbirds and bees enjoy the garden too. These sages have evolved specifically to attract hummingbirds.

Michèle, I’m sorry to read about the toxicity of the fields near you and how adversely it effects the surrounding area. We people can be so careless
