Streamside Sphagnum (Sphagnum riparium)
Description
Sphagnum riparium forms quite large, pale green or even light-exposed spots also pale green-brown colored plants and is already macroscopically distinguished from the other peat mosses. Thus the end bud is clearly formed. The dyed or slightly browned stems are easily fragile. The hanging, approximately 1.4 mm long, tongue-shaped stems are incised at the tip or shallow V-shaped frayed. The egg-shaped lanceolate, long-pointed branches are about 1.5 to 3 mm long and are dry-wavy and hook-shaped back-curved.Microscopically significant features are the enlarged bark cells, which form 2 to 3 layers. The stem-blade hyalocytes do not have fibrils or pores. The branch-chlorocytes appear triangular in cross-section, and are usually freed on both sides, and are at most enclosed by the arched hyalocytes.
