Fringed Candle Snuffer Moss (Encalypta ciliata)
Description
A pale green moss with shoots that are about 2 cm tall, and leaves 3-4 mm long. The leaves are broad, more or less parallel-sided, opaque, very matt, and abruptly narrowed to the tip. The nerve ends below the tip or is shortly excurrent. The capsules, which are usually present, are smooth, have a rudimentary or absent peristome, and until maturity are entirely covered by a very large calyptra, which is fringed with cilia at the base (at least when young).
