Cratoneuron Moss (Cratoneuron filicinum)
Description
Cratoneuron filicinum , alsocalled Fernn-hnliches Starknervmoos , is a Laubmoos species from the family Amblystegiaceae. The species is, according to the present state of the systematics, the world's only species of the genus Cratoneuron. Cratoneuron filicinum forms loosely and low ceilings or lawns with yellow-green to golden brown color. The lying to almost upright plants are about 3 to 5 centimeters long and branched out little and irregularly or (frequently) regularly. Particularly low-lying stems are often covered with numerous brown rhizoids. Paraphyllia may be few to numerous. The stalk-leaves are triangular, have an often crescent-shaped blade tip, serrated leaf margins and a very strong leaf rib (name Cratoneuron: Greek kratos = strength and neuron = nerve), which often reaches the tip of the leaf. The clearly set leaf leaves run down the trunk. The branches are smaller, The laminate sheets of the center of the sheet are about twice to six times as long as wide. The cells of the leaf-wings are distinctly larger, inflated, and hyaline, and form a group sharply defined by the other leaf-cells. Sporophytes have a purple seta up to 4 centimeters long and a cylindrical and strongly curved capsule with a conical-pointed lid. The capsule is severely narrowed under the mouth. The papillary spores are about 14 to 22 -m in size. Spore ripe is in spring. This species is quite rich in form and variable. The range varies from strong watery molds with almost straight leaves, slightly toothed leaf margins and a short emergent leaf ridge (var. Fallax) up to mountain spines with leafy stalked leaves with attached tip and variegated leaf rib (var. Curvicaule).
