Petunia altiplana is a perennial , herbaceous plant that grows down, often forming mat-shaped pads and rarely gets higher than 5 cm. The stems are often branched, they are lying down or hanging from the base. They easily form adventitious roots on older parts . They are densely woolly hairy with glandular trichomes of about 1 mm in length. The internodes are short and 2 to 15 (rarely to 35) mm long. The main root is thick, straight and usually unbranched. The leavesare low-lying, broad spatulate or occasionally reversed ovate to circular. They reach a length of 10 to 25 (rarely to 48) mm and a width of 5 to 15 (rarely to 29) mm. They are sparsely hairy to glabrous, only at the edges and on the underside along the midrib, they are always hairy. The base is tapered, sitting or nearly sitting, the tip is always rounded. The flowers are on flower stems , which are shorter than 10 mm, and are dense glandular and woolly hairy. The similarly hairy calyx is split up to 2 to 3 mm above the base into five linear segments. They are usually shorter than 10 mm, rarely they are up to 13 mm long. They are 1 to 2 mm wide and rounded at the top, they are not or only slightly protruding. The crownincluding the lobes is 20 to 35 (rarely to 45) mm long. The Kronröhre is narrow bell-shaped, tapering at the base and 15 to 20 (rarely to 25) mm long. The inside is pale purple or whitish to the veining, the outside is reddish purple and especially fine hairy along the veins. The lobes are reddish purple and divided into five circular sections. The five stamens occur in three sizes: two long, two middle and one short. All stamens are longer than the calyx, they are free from the second third of the corolla tube. The stamens are hairless and attach to the base of the Kronröhre. The ovary is ovoid, the pen is slim and slightly bilobed stigma is between the anthers of the middle and long stamens. On the fruit of the stem is strongly bent and usually less than 10 mm long, rarely it is up to 15 mm long. The capsule is spherical and thorny. The fine seeds are inversely kidney-shaped and are 0.67 to 0.87 mm long.
