Artocarpus (Artocarpus tamaran)
Description
The Penan Benalui people of Borneo used the bark of this tree to make cloth. The fleshy aril around the seed is edible, very sweet and pleasant. This species, as well as several other endemic Artocarpus of Borneo, is becoming rarer as forests are cut down and traditional uses of these plants are forgotten. Outside of Borneo this species is almost unknown. Seeds germinate readily and young plants grow quickly. The mature plant is extremely impressive with its massive leaves. It prefers a hot, humid tropical climate and seems impartial to soil conditions other than that it should be well-drained.
