Description
Skytanthus acutus,goat's head,goat's horn,is a species of flowered plant of the family Apocynaceae.It is endemic to the Chilean sandy northand to the extreme north of Argentina It is a bush of 4-13 dm of height,globose,expanded.Leaves fleshy,green glaucous,glabrous,alternating,linear to oblong,uninervated,apex mucronate,margins curled,3-7 cm x 5-9 mm,in a short petiole.Apical flowers,enclosed in adjacent leaves,chalice of 5- sepals lanceolate,acute,hairy,5-8 mm long;corolla campanulate,intense yellow,6-8 mm long,limb 13-17 mm long,5 petals;5 stamens above the corolla;super ovary,2 locules,style with stigma claviform,bifid at apex.Fruit 2 follicles,cylindrical,chestnut,up to 2 dm long,leathery,woody,coiled like goat horns;compressed seeds,somewhat winged.Anemophilous dispersion.
