Description
Gomphocarpus is a genus of milkweeds first described as a genus in 1810. It is widespread across much of Africa, with a few species naturalized in other regions. They are erect herbaceous plants that reach 50-150 cm high (-300), often basally branched to little branched, with white latex (abundant), their underground organs are woody roots. The leaves are opposite or whorled, sessile or subsessile, slightly ascending to firmly ascending; fleshy or coriaceous, 3-12 cm long (-18), 0.3-2 cm wide (-6), linear or triangular, delta or elongate and oval, basally truncate or cuneate or cordate, the apex acute or acuminate or attenuated, usually slightly revolutionary. The inflorescences are extra-axillary, solitary, with 4-15 flowers (-30), simple. It has a chromosome number of : 2n = 22 ( G. cancellatus ( Burm.f. ) Bruyns , G. filiformis ( E.Mey. ) Dietr. , G. fruticosus (L.) WTAiton ).
