Description
Poupartia borbonica the red white wood or Zevi brown is a dioecious tree of the family of Anacardiaceae endemic of the Mascarene Islands The genus Poupartia is dedicated to the botanist and anatomist François Poupart In the adult stage, this species is sometimes confused with Zanthoxylum heterophyllum commonly known as pepperwood.This plant is used in traditional medicine as contraceptive 2 it was used in the past to treat nephritis and boils.A phytochemical study of the leaves of this tree was carried out by the team of Professor Frédérich Michel Laboratory of Pharmacognosy of the University of Liège The antimalarial activity of leaf extracts has been demonstrated. The molecules responsible for its activity, obtained by bioguide fractionation have been identified as Poupartones ( alkyl cyclohexenone derivatives ). These compounds have been tested on several strains of Plasmodium and have a very promising activity. However, these compounds are not devoid of toxicity. The leaves ofPoupartia borbonica also contain flavonoids ; of quercetin 3'-O-hydroxysulfonylquercétine of quercitrin, of isoquercitrin and the ellagic acid participating in the activity pest plant
