Description
The chilacayote, cozolmeca, palo de agua or palo de tecolote ( Vochysia guatemalensis ) is a species of plant belonging to the family Vochysiaceae. Tree of medium to large size, reaching 25 to 45 m in height and a diameter at breast height (dap) of up to 1.8 meters. The shaft is cylindrical and straight up to two thirds of its height, cylindrical and free of branches, although it sometimes bifurcates. The cup is rounded, narrow and very dense. Bark: smooth bark, with light gray color. Opposite simple leaves in groups of 3-4, 15 to 20 cm and 5 to 7 cm wide, bright in the beam. Flowers: The trees are very colorful when they bloom; with yellow petals on the flowers. The fruit is a capsule with oblong and narrow cavities, about 7 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. There are 3 seeds per capsule, each seed with unilateral wings with many hairs on the head of the seed. In Mexico it is located in the states of Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Also it is located throughout Central America and Colombia.
