Wedgeleaf Dock (Rumex frutescens)
Description
Rumex frutescens, Dotted here and there close to the sea at Weston-super-mare quite a few plants of this small perennial Dock were amongst the dune vegetation. At first sight these plants with cabbage-like leaves did not look much like typical Docks but close up the typical three sided fruits (tubercles) immediately reminded us of other Rumex species. There is very little of this introduced south American species in the British Isles with just a few colonies in the Scottish borders and east Anglia but most of it is in the south west of England.
