Sarcochilus hillii (Sarcochilus hillii)
Description
This small epiphyte grows on twigs, branches and trunks of trees in open forest around Brisbane. Where conditions are suitable, a suitable host will be covered in dozens to hundreds of plants. Although locally common, this orchid is easily overlooked. This orchid usually has a few leaves to 10cm by 4mm, but a large plant can have 50 or more leaves. The leaves are often spotted red.The flower stem is to 10cm with up to 10 flowers, each about 10mm across. The only other similar species which could be confused is Sarcochilus ceciliae which can be separated by its erect leaves and flower stems and its strongly cupped much smaller pink flowers.
