Splendid paphiopedilum (Paphiopedilum insigne)
Description
Paphiopedilum insigne has been reported from India (Meghalaya), Bangladesh (Sylhet), Myanmar, China (northwest Yunnan) and Thailand (Do Chiang Dao) (Hau 1972, Seidenfaden 1995, Cribb 1998, Pradhan 1976, Cribb 1998, Chowdhery 2004, Misra 2007, Chen et al. 2009, Liu et al. 2009, Govaerts et al. 2014). Originally the species was described based on a specimen from Sylhet in Bangladesh. There is no forest left in this region at the present time and there have been no further reports of this species from Bangladesh since its first discovery. Later this species was discovered in Meghalaya in India and later still it was discovered in Yunnan in China. The report from Thailand by Seidenfaden (1995) was based on a single flower and there was an erroneous report from Myanmar by Hua (1972). There are no current records of the species from either Myanmar or Thailand. They are likely extinct from these localities, if ever present, which also indicates the immense threat on this species.
