Corybas abellianus (Corybas abellianus)
Description
Corybas abellianus is a species of orchid belonging to the suborder Acianthinae, endemic to northern Queensland , Australia. They are small, delicate annual plants of discrete flowers that hide in the middle of the foliage, so that little is seen in nature. They dry during the driest or hotter period and sprout again during the milder climate season, which varies depending on the climate of the region where they are located. This species presents in very few roots , replaced by small pairs of ovoid tubers the stems short and erect with a single basal leaf, herbaceous, flat and soft; the inflorescence is small and short with only a small terminal flower of discreet, resupined color; the floral segments are free, the dorsal sepal much larger than the other segments, falling, hiding most of the flower, the lateral sepals and the petals are similar, but the last, smaller; the lipis much smaller than the remaining, simple segments, with curved edges inward; the spine has molten wings along the body, it is delicate, thicker at the base, with no foot, with a persistent terminal anther containing four unequal, cream-colored pollinias , fixed directly on the viscise. Due to the positioning of the dorsal sepal, which hides the interior of the flower, little is known about the mechanism of pollination of this species, observation still difficult because of its complicated cultivation. In 2002, Clements and Jones, proposed the division of Corybas in diverse genres. As it is not yet known whether there will be consensus on this proposal in the scientific community, here we bring all species according to their previous classification. In this work this species remains as Corybas.
