Description
They are annual herbs, rarely sufruticosas . Stems usually simple, erect, 4-angled and often slightly winged. Leaves sessile to shortly petiolate, slightly amplexicaul, membranous to subcoriaceous, pinnately ribbed. Inflorescences in terminal or axillary dicas, simple or compounds generally modified to form secondary, racemose aggregates. Pedicelled flowers with a perianth and androceo 5-match; campanulate calyx tube, wolves keeled, persistent; infundibuliform corolla, slightly zygomorphic, white to yellow or yellow-green or rarely pink or bluish, the gibbous tube, the erect wolves to patents; stamens included or slightly exerted with the adnate filaments up to 1/2 proximal of the corolla tube, the basally sagittate and generally inverted anthers, the pollen in tetrads; 1-locular ovary with placenta deeply projected inward, thin, persistent style, 2-lobate stigma. Ovoid capsules, septicly 2-valvated; small, angular, reticulated seeds.
