Buckwheat Tree (Cliftonia monophylla)
Description
Cliftonia monophylla is a evergreen tree or shrub. The petal has two leaves, which are thrown off. The petals have no glands. The stamens are arranged in two leaf circles, each with five leaves, the stamens are laterally widened, in the lower half are crumbly. The fruit nodes are three to fivefold and three to five-edged, with a hanging seed system per compartment . The almost unmarked, massive scar is lobed two to five fold. The fruit is two to five-winged and contains up to five seeds, but usually the seeds are missing.
