Schweinitz'S Flatsedge (Cyperus schweinitzii)
Description
This short, cool-season sedge is found in sandy soils in open woodlands, along stream or river banks and in dunes or by rock outcroppings. Its leaves angle out from a common point near the plant's base. Seed heads form in tight clusters in mid-summer. The species is named for a botanist more famous for identifying thousands of species of fungi. Rough Sand Sedge is a cool-season grass; it actively grows during the spring and fall when soil temperatures are cool.
