Pequi (Caryocar brasiliense)
Description
Pequi or walnut tree ( Caryocar brasiliense ; Caryocaraceae ) is a plant species with flower with fruit native to Brazil. It is a tree no more than 9 m high; compound leaves , trifoliate, opposite, very pubescent, 2 dm wide; Hermaphrodite flowers , 8 cm in diameter, 5- petals. It is a yellow fruit with a strong taste and smell. It is part of the ingredients of the dishes that are served in Goiás and Minas Gerais and can be eaten by itself or accompanying another meal. The pequi with rice and chicken is especially popular. Pequi oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant and used as an edible oil. The pequi plays an important role in the culture of the original peoples in Brazil in the Cerrado region.
