Thelocactus conothelos (Thelocactus conothelos)
Description
Thelocactus conothelos is a species of the genus Thelocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet conothelos means (Greek cone) cones, (Greek thele) warts; with conical warts'. Thelocactus conothelos always grows single, spherical and has a 7 to 18 cm high body with a diameter of 7 to 18 centimeters. The ribs are indistinct. The warts are conical to conical, light green at the bottom square. The areoles are 3 millimeters wide woolly. The 7 to 20 Randdornen are glassy, ocher yellow to grayish, straight, needle-shaped and are only 8 to 12 millimeters long. The 4 middle spines are between 1 and 9 inches long, acicular and ocher yellow to greyish. The flowers are large, widely spread, 4.5 to 6 inches long and wide. The flower color varies from white to magenta. The fruits are often basal popping 12 millimeters long and about 7 millimeters in diameter. The seeds are very dark reddish to purple to black with finely teased testa.
