Pitahayo (Stenocereus martinezii)
Description
Stenocereus martinezii grows tree-shaped with numerous branched shoots and reaches stature heights of 5 to 7 meters. It is formed up to a 1 meter high trunk with a diameter of up to 25 centimeters. The more or less cylindrical shoots have diameters of 8 to 20 centimeters. There are ten to twelve ribs on which are striking dark reddish-brown areoles . The single, greyish to black central spine - rarely are up to three middle spines present - is horizontally projecting to slightly sideways. He is 2 to 5 inches long. The four to nine, rarely to eleven, weak spines are greyish and 2 to 6 millimeters (rarely up to 12 millimeters) long. The funnel-shaped, whitish and yellowish flowers open at night and remain open until the next day. They are 5 to 7 inches long and have diameters of 3.1 to 6.6 centimeters. The spherical to egg-shaped, green fruits reach a diameter of 3 to 4.5 centimeters. With maturity, they are increasingly blushing red. The pulp is red.
