Baseball cactus (Pterocactus tuberosus)
Description
Pterocactus tuberosus forms several low to somewhat ascending, cylindrical and unpeeled shoots. They are brown or greenish brown and are 7 to 20 inches long and 0.5 to 1.5 inches in diameter. On the shoots vertical violet lines are present below the areoles Per Areole sit 8 to 12 whitish thorns which are 0.5 to 1 centimeter long. The roots are big and bulbous.The lemon yellow to brownish yellow or copper-colored flowers are 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter, the scar is dark red or light green. The spherical fruit reaches 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter and is initially dark brown in color, later it dries and is ocher.
