Viejo (Pilosocereus purpusii)
Description
Pilosocereus purpusii is a species in the genus Pilosocereus of the cactus family(Cactaceae). A trivial name is "Viejo". Pilosocereus purpusii grows shrubby, branched or sometimes unbranched and reaches heights of growth of 2 to 3 meters. The upright, olive shoots are at their tip sometimes bluish and have diameters of 4 to 5 centimeters. There are 7 to 12 low ribs with visible transverse furrows. The opaque thorns are initially yellowish and gray or almost black. The mostly single central spine, sometimes present up to four, is 1.5 to 2.5 inches long. The 8 to 10 outstretched spines are up to 10 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is clearly pronounced. The flowering areolesare located directly at the shoot tip as well as shortly below. They are studded with numerous silky hairs
