Nopal de cerro (Opuntia lasiacantha)
Description
Opuntia lasiacantha is a species in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) of the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet lasiacantha means, (Greek lasios) densely hairy; densely occupied with hairy, bristly spikes'. Spanish trivial names are "Nopal" and "Nopal de Cerro". Opuntia lasiacantha grows shrubby or tree-shaped with mostly upright appearing from the base, reaching stature heights of 0.5 to 4 meters. The green, bare, not humped, obovate to elliptical shoot sections are 18 to 30 inches long and 12.5 to 17 inches wide. The small areoles are 2 to 3 centimeters apart. The striking yellow glochids are 2 to 4 millimeters long. The one to three slightly peachy to needlelike, protruding to backward, straight, whitish or yellow spines gnaw in old age.
