Nopal chamacuero (Nopalea dejecta)
Description
Opuntia dejecta is a species in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the family of cactus (Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet dejecta means (lat. Dejectus) lowered, low-lying, overhanging '. A Spanish trivial name is "Nopal Chamacuero"Opuntia dejecta grows short tree-shaped with spreading to hanging branches and reaches stature heights of 1 to 2 meters. A clear trunk is formed. The green to gray-green, rather thick, narrow, lanceolate shoot sections are 15 to 20 inches long and 5 to 8 inches wide. The glochids are whitish. The usually two slightly outstretched, yellow or slightly pink thorns turn gray in old age. They are up to 4 inches long.
