Club cholla (Grusonia clavata)
Description
Grusonia clavata is a species in the genus Grusonia from the family of the cactus (Cactaceae). The specific epithet clavata means (lat. Clavatus) keulig, club-like '. Trivial names are "Club Cholla" and "Dagger Cholla".Grusonia clavata grows low, is spreading widely and forms mats of 5 to 15 centimeters height. The roots are fibrous. The short club-shaped, clearly narrowed to its base, egg-shaped humped drive sections are 2.5 to 7.5 inches long and have a diameter of 1.5 to 3 inches on. The circular areoles are covered with white to gray wool and yellowish-white glochids , which are up to 4 millimeters long at the upper areola parts. The seven to 15 white to yellowish to ocher thornsare mostly located in the areoles near the shoot tips. The thorns are ascending, angularly flattened until almost turning. Of the lower thorns, three to five are bent down, white and 1.2 to 3.5 inches long. The longer ones are sword-shaped.The bright yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 2.5 centimeters. The barrel-shaped to ellipsoid, yellow fruits are fleshy and covered with glochids. They are 3.5 to 4.5 inches long and have diameters of 1.5 to 2.5 inches.
