Rainbow cactus (Echinocereus pectinatus)
Description
Echinocereus pectinatus grows erectly spherical to cylindrical, usually single, becoming 8 to 35 cm long and 3 to 13 cm in diameter. The plant bodies are entirely enveloped by comb-shaped spines, which form white and pink zones. The 12 to 23 ribs are blunt. They are filled with dense, elliptical, initially short white-felted, approximately 3 millimeters long areoles. The 12 to 30 marginal mandibles are comb-shaped, facing two sides, somewhat bent back and 5 to 15 millimeters long with whitish to pink tint. The 1 to 5 middle mandibles vary in color from yellowish, pink to brownish and are between 1 to 25 millimeters long.
