Macdougall's cactus (Disocactus macdougallii)
Description
The nopalillo orchid of Macdougall ( Disocactus macdougallii ) belongs to the cactaceae family (Cactaceae). The word Disocactus comes from the Greek 'dis' double and from the Greek 'isos' the same and the Latin 'cactus' cacti, that is, plants with flattened leaf stems (with two similar sides). ' Macdougalli ' by Thomas Macdougall, Scottish botanist and explorer. It is a nopalillo of the Cactaceae family of the order Caryophyllales . It is described as an epiphytic plant ; flattened, oblong-linear stems, 15 to 45 cm long and 2 to 5 cm wide, shiny, bright green with red ends; areolas small, with short wool. Diurnal flowers, with an unpleasant smell, infundibuliforms, purple rose, 7 to 8 cm long. Ovoid fruits, tuberculated, with pronounced ribs, areolas with wool and short, green hairs; ovoid, foveolate, black seeds.
