Description
The maguey tepeztate or maguey pichomel ( Agave marmorata ) is a species of the family Asparagaceae . Growth plant rosetofilo acaules (without stem), solitary or rarely from 1 to 6 individuals, stoloniferous; little dense rosettes, 1 to 2 m high, 1.5 to 2.5 m in diameter. Leaves 16 to 20 per individual, 1 to 1.3 m long, 0.2 to 0.3 m wide, broadly lanceolate , arranged in several directions, frequently wavy, grooved , bent at the apex , yellowish-green with translucent bluish green bands, rough, papillose, crenate margin, fleshy, dentate, teeth 0.7 to 1 cm long, 0.7 to 1 cm wide, terminal spine 1.5 to 2 cm long, 4-8 mm wide. Inflorescences with general outline longer than wide, 5.5 to 7 m high, fertile in the middle or upper third, primary branches 20 to 40, 30 to 50 cm long, secondary branches 8 to 12 cm long, tertiary 2 4 cm long, sometimes quaternary 1 to 2 cm long; green peduncle ; bracts 10 to 20 cm long, 6 to 9 cm wide at the base, triangular, of consistency like paper. Flowers 3 to 4 cm long, yellow; Tepals 1.2 to 1.7 cm long, 2 to 3 mm wide, erect, thick; stamens with filaments 3 to 3.5 cm long, inserted in the middle of the tube or at the base of the tepals, yellow;anthers 1 to 1.3 cm long, 1 to 2 mm wide, yellow; the fruit is a capsule of 2.5 to 3.5 cm long, 1.5 to 2 cm wide, longer than wide, brown; seeds 5 to 7 mm long, 3 to 5 mm wide, black, provided with wings approximately 1 mm wide. Agave marmorata is recognized by the lax rosettes with greenish-yellowish or blue-green leaves, rough to the touch, short and robust spines, inflorescence not very dense and small flowers of bright yellow color.
