Rough Century Plant (Agave asperrima)
Description
Agave asperrima forms open rosettes, sprouted ample and sometimes sparsely focussing. It attains heights of 70 to 100 centimeters and a diameter of up to 200 centimeters. The variable, rindy, roughened, lanceolate, light green to bluish leaves are 60 to 110 cm long and 12 to 16 cm wide. The rare horny leaf margins are variable toothed. The brown end-thorn is 3.5 to 6 cm long. The rispy slender, broad, straight inflorescence becomes 4 to 6 m high. The narrow yellow flowers are 60 to 80 mm long and appear at the upper part of the inflorescence at irregularly arranged small branches. The flowering tube is 13 to 20 mm long. The elongated three-chambered capsule fruits are 40 to 50 mm long and 17 to 20 mm wide. The flat, black seeds are up to 5 mm long and 6 to 7 mm wide. The flowering period is from April to July.
